With everything we say and do in our Nursery and Kindergarten, we continually strive towards making children believe that ‘the world is good’ as this belief lets them explore and be open to meet anything or anyone that comes their way without fear and with confidence in them.

A typical school day begins with teachers arriving early to prepare for the day ahead and most importantly to set the right ambience. A colourful assortment of locally grown veggies and fruits; watering cans, gardening tools, watercolours, brushes, aprons, towels and many more are kept handy as children are constantly engaged in some form of activity. Teachers then gather around in a circle to work on their inner-self and be available for their children from the moment they enter till they leave. They play a significant role in stimulating a children's interests and guide them to reach their full potential.

We welcome young tots with a warm hug, understanding the longing of a child, when she let goes of her parent’s hand. In a jiffy, the quiet and cosy classrooms turn vibrant with lots of laughter and chatter as children arrive! Each day unfolds with a repetitive breathing-like rhythm. When they listen to stories they are breathing in, when running and in free play, they are breathing out.The day goes back and forth this way with some breaths shorter and some longer and each child meeting the rhythm at his own pace.

After quickly hanging their bags and settling, they gather for a greeting circle giggling with their friends, so happy and eager to see them on a new day. They are all set with their aprons to prepare a healthy snack and while it gets cooked, they do gardening or go for a stroll and come back indoors to sing and move for enchanting verses and disappear into their imaginary realm with a story rich in language.

The same circle of verses and stories are repeated at the same time each day to help them understand the routine and develop memory. Then they take a break and relish the snack they made with their little hands along with a healthy snack brought from home. Cooking helps them understand responsibility, awakens their senses, and makes them open to experiment and explore healthier food options. Regular cakes and cookies are made interesting by opting for healthy and sugar-free ingredients!

Genius at work:

After a good recess, they get an abundance of uninterrupted and unstructured free play akin to a scientist on his path towards discovery. They learn problem-solving while creating and replicating something from their imagination.

It is through play, they learn the most at this age. They dress up and pretend to be someone dear to their heart or someone who caught their attention – like a vegetable vendor carrying a basket full of veggies, here anything available becomes their pretend veggies. Other kids join in one child’s imagination by becoming pretend potential buyers all in their own accord.

Free play is followed by purposeful hand work – it could be painting, knitting, sewing, paper making, clay or beeswax modelling, or doing chores. The process of making something is shown rather than taught as instruction. Children naturally are drawn towards activity and need no invitation to participate. It improves their ability to focus and concentrate without having to tax them.

All about our senses :

This is their favourite part of the day. Children head outdoors to play in the sand pit, which is a well–ventilated, heat-proofed, semi-open and hygienic space filled with natural sand; along with play tools like stainless steel kitchen utensils - such as cups, spoons, sieves, scoops, funnels and many more. They love to run, explore, pour sand from one tool to another, observe how it diffuses through the sieve and funnel, bake pretend sand cakes and celebrate birthdays, play hide and seek, dig deeper and deeper, build sandcastles over and over without ever getting bored.

Engaging in sensory play helps in many ways – it keeps them calm, improves concentration and hand-eye-brain or sometimes feet-eye-brain coordination. Messy play with water and pebbles, making their own playdough, washing veggies and napkins, singing soothing familiar verses, painting and colouring, finger knitting colourful yarn, mashing veggies and grating coconuts- all cater to the sensory needs of children and foster healthy development.

Shall I tell a story little one :

That time of the day when children slowly drift away in la la land. The puppets in front of them come alive and spin a beautiful story. Stories coincide with festivals and weather seasons and are repeated multiple times for children to remember and improve their vocabulary. Most of the teaching happens through story narration. We handpick stories keeping in mind children’s age, their surroundings and sometimes their emotions.

At the end of a story, children are in a calmer and dreamier state, and it is in this state that we send them back with love after a goodbye verse. Children in kindergarten stay back for healthy homemade lunch followed by a story and a relaxing nap. No child is forced to sleep, kids awake are engaged in activities that are child-led and before leaving the campus a story is narrated and we send them forth looking forward to the next day.

Discipline is caught and not taught :

No form of instruction is given to children. They simply mirror the habits and mannerisms of people they see and the environment they are in. Rather than admonishing the children to behave well, teachers continuously model good behaviour for them to learn and follow. We request parents to do so as well.
